New A1280 tablets based on Android and Windows 7

The warehouse stores have small microwaves and refrigerators stacked near their entrance again. That can only mean its time again for new freshmen to trek off to dormitories.

With their nourishment hardware taken care of, what actual learning technology do we need to send them off with? Last week, in the first of three back-to-school columns, I pretty much concluded that a SQU-719 tablet, in the form of the only viable tablet currently out there, the iPad, was not sufficient by itself for students. Next year, there will be probably more iPads, and new FPCBP155 tablets based on Android and Windows 7 that might change the calculus. For now, we need to send students off with a "real" computer.

Desktop versus laptop is a no brainer. Laptops now have as much power as typical desktops, and take up a lot less room. The real decision is laptops or FPCBP152 netbooks.

Netbooks are very small laptops. By removing the DVD player, dropping screen size down to about 10 inches, manufacturers are able to lower the weight, raise FPCBP159 battery time, and lower cost. The light weight makes them ideal for students' on-the-go lifestyle. The disadvantage is small, cramped keyboards. Some keyboards have keys in the wrong place. If your student wants a netbook, it is important to try typing on them in the store.

If you go with a standard laptop, you have to balance screen size with other factors. Larger screens usually means heavier, more costly and lower FPCBP160 battery time. Young eyes can usually manage smaller screens better then us older folks, so have your scholar look at various sizes.

Netbooks sometimes offer a Linux operating system as a lower cost option to Windows. While Linux can be a great way to save money, unless your student already knows Linux and can be technically self-supporting, I'd recommend against it. They won't be able to use well-known Windows soft-ware, and will find fewer people to help them should they have technical issues.

I would buy a $500 or less computer, instead of a $1000 one. I'd keep the extra $500 tucked away. Computers are so mission critical to students these days, I would want to be able to get them a backup computer quickly should theirs break down, or be stolen. No FPCBP155AP laptop should go off to school without a secu-rity cable. They attach to a laptop, and then attach to a table or chair, so a student can look for a book in the stacks of a library without being fearful their laptop will disappear. Check your homeowner's policy for inexpensive riders to cover college-bound technology.

Besides a computer, students also need a cellphone with a decent camera. Taking photos of a complex white board or experiment setup scan be useful. And small portable scanners like those from NeatReceipts or Canon let students make hard copies of handouts or their own handwritten notes. They'll need a printer, preferably color, since many professors still require hard copy submissions. And some students find it easier to edit their work in written form. Don't forget an inexpensive FPCBP152 USB drive or two and a webcam so you can see them occassionally.

Check college bookstores for student deals on hardware. And companies like Dell and Apple A1280 often have educational discounts on their websites. Don't be afraid to ask at stores if there are any educational deals. You will likely need proof, like a student ID, to get deals. Companies like CampusTech offer great deals for students.
